Why can’t I insert a standard USB 2.0 flash drive into my HP 110 mini laptop?

I know HOW to insert one, I’ve done it for years, but is this normal for HP computers or for or “mini laptop-netbook-notebook” whatever they’re called? Do they have different kinds of USB for HP and\or mini laptops?

As I insert the drive, the error message I get is “Unknown device. Refer to documentation to troubleshoot”. Naturally, no answer is provided in either hardware manual.
